What is a modified tennis court (line conversion)?

A tennis court fitted with additional or redrawn court lines to accommodate pickleball dimensions and boundaries, enabling the same court to serve both sports.

A modified tennis court is a tennis facility that has been adapted to allow pickleball play alongside or instead of standard tennis by converting or adding pickleball-specific lines. Since a pickleball court is roughly one-third the size of a tennis court, operators typically paint or apply removable tape to mark the smaller pickleball boundaries, net placement, service boxes, and non-volley zones (the "kitchen") within the existing tennis court area.

This approach is common in Kuala Lumpur and other urban areas where dedicated pickleball facilities are limited. The conversion allows venue operators to maximize court usage across different sports and appeal to the growing local pickleball community without requiring separate construction or land.

Line conversion can be done using permanent paint or semi-permanent tape, depending on whether the court will host both sports regularly or shift primarily to pickleball. Painted lines are durable but harder to reverse, while taped lines offer flexibility for venues that alternate between sports or want to test demand before committing to permanent changes.

Players should confirm line clarity and court condition before booking, as faded or overlapping markings can affect game accuracy. Outdoor court providers in the directory often specify whether their courts use line conversion and what marking method they employ.
