What is sports flooring (PU vs PVC)?

Sports flooring refers to the synthetic playing surfaces installed in indoor courts, with polyurethane (PU) and PVC/vinyl being the two primary types used in converted badminton and futsal halls across Kuala Lumpur.

Indoor pickleball courts in Kuala Lumpur are built on one of two main synthetic flooring systems: polyurethane (PU) or PVC/vinyl. These materials form the hard court surface where the ball bounces and players move, and the choice between them affects play speed, durability, and maintenance needs.

Polyurethane flooring is a layered system bonded to a concrete base, offering consistent ball response and good shock absorption. PU courts are common in converted badminton halls throughout the Klang Valley because the material performs well under the stop-and-start demands of racket sports. The surface is typically sealed and requires regular cleaning to maintain grip.

PVC/vinyl flooring comes in interlocking tiles or rolled sheets laid over the existing floor. It is lighter to install than PU and easier to replace in sections, making it popular in futsal facilities being repurposed for pickleball. Vinyl provides reliable consistency but may feel slightly different underfoot than PU, with less natural shock absorption built into the material itself.

The distinction matters for players because surface feel, speed of play, and injury risk vary between the two. Court operators must also factor durability and repair costs when choosing. Many indoor court providers in the KL area specify which system their facilities use, as regular players often develop preferences based on how their shoes grip and how the ball responds to their strokes.
